Finding Clarity and Confidence: Katya Fish’s Story of Change

Life doesn’t always follow the plan—but sometimes, detours lead us exactly where we’re meant to be. For Katya Fish, a surprising chapter at the University of Pennsylvania became the catalyst for a bold personal transformation.

While navigating a serious health diagnosis at UPenn’s hospital, Katya often found herself walking the campus, imagining a different reality—one where she was a student, not just a patient. That spark of curiosity planted a seed, even if doubts lingered at first. “I’d look at the students and think, ‘I don’t belong here. I’m not smart enough,’” she recalls. But that belief would eventually shift—thanks to an unexpected journey of self-discovery.

After recovering physically, Katya found herself struggling emotionally. Despite outward success—a happy marriage, a beautiful home—she felt disconnected, stuck, and overwhelmed. “I realized I had everything I thought I wanted, but I couldn’t smile. I wasn’t happy,” she says. That realization set her on a search for something more meaningful.

A documentary introduced her to Rythmia, a wellness center in Costa Rica known for its immersive programs in personal growth. “I didn’t know anything about plant medicine at the time,” she says, “but Rythmia made it approachable. They really help first-timers understand the process.” The experience gave her more than just perspective—it gave her tools.

At Rythmia, she learned about surrender and the importance of letting go of control. “Trying to control everything was exhausting. I was losing energy fighting reality,” she explains. “But surrendering isn’t giving up—it’s choosing peace in the moment.” She left with powerful insights, but also with questions. Why do some people experience breakthroughs, but struggle to sustain them?

Her curiosity led her to explore the idea of integration—the process of turning insights into lasting change. “So many people have incredible experiences, but without support, it’s easy to lose the thread,” she says. That realization inspired her to pursue formal education in psychology at UPenn, where she’s currently finishing her degree with the goal of opening her own practice.

Over time, her journey continued, culminating in a powerful moment of clarity at Finca Ambiwasi, a retreat center in Colombia. “That final ceremony felt like everything came together,” she says. “The puzzle pieces finally made sense. But it took 20 ceremonies and a lot of patience to get there.”

That patience and curiosity now inform her work. “Healing doesn’t happen in one moment,” she emphasizes. “It’s a process—and it looks different for everyone.” Katya’s approach combines practical support with deep listening, whether someone is exploring plant medicine or simply trying to navigate life’s challenges. “You don’t need to have done a ceremony to benefit from this kind of work. We start wherever you are.”

With plans to open her practice after completing her clinical hours, Katya’s vision is rooted in helping people reconnect—with themselves, their purpose, and their potential. “Everyone’s on a different path, and that’s okay,” she says. “The right people will find me. We’re all vibrating on different frequencies, and the connection has to feel right.”

The Takeaway
From imagining a future at UPenn to building one, Katya Fish’s story is about transformation that comes not from a single moment, but from a series of small, brave choices. Her journey reminds us that even after hard times, there’s space for clarity, connection, and renewal. With curiosity as her compass, Katya now helps others navigate their own next chapter—one step, one insight at a time.
